KAJIADO COUNTY GOVERNMENT LAUNCH FREE OBSTATRIC FISTULA CAMP AT KAJIADO REFERAL HOSPITAL.

Date: 28-01-2022

Kajiado county government in partnership with AMREF Health Africa and Bayer East Africa conducted a seven-day surgical mission in Kajiado referral hospital on obstetric fistula with the aim to restore women dignity.

Fistula is a disease that occurs as a complication of obstructed labour whereby a hole(fistula) develops between the rectum or bladder and the vagina. In most cases the baby is still inborn, and the woman faces long disorders like severe nerve damage in the legs.

The cause of fistula is the absence of skilled care to damage obstructed labour. It is also caused by delays when a mother is transferred to a health center in remote areas where infrastructure is poor. Especially where there is no means of transport and poor roads.

Speaking during the launch, the deputy governor, said that the women in remote areas of Kajiado county have suffered a lot. Many women have suffered a lot and isolate themselves because they have fistula but thanks to AMREF the women will now get treated and see themselves as members of the community. The deputy governor expressed the desire to see Kajiado county being free of fistula.

AMREF CEO Dr. Githinji Gitahi expressed that many women feel excluded. “Millions of girls and young women in resource poor countries are ashamed and isolated often abandoned by their husbands and excluded by their families and community. They often live in poverty, shunned and blamed by the society. We want to help our women feel comfortable and with the support of the county government the patient will get quality fistula repair services”.

This project will benefit many Women who are suffering with fistula. They also donated motorcycles in-order to deliver services to remote areas.
