Women's Voice and Leadership (WVL) project in Kenya

The Women's Voice and Leadership Kenya ((WVL) - project aims to contribute to gender equality and the increased enjoyment of human rights by women and girls in Kenya. It is a 5 years grant by the government of Canada through Global Affairs Canada (GAC) and is anchored on Canada's Feminist International Assistance Policy (FIAP) which puts gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls at the heart of international development, humanitarian, peace and security efforts. This is one of a number of WVL projects worldwide funded by Global Affairs Canada. The goal of the project is increased enjoyment of human rights by women and girls and the enjoymet of gender equality in Kenya

Empowering Women's Rights Organizations

There are three Major Pillars of the WVL Program

Grant Making

Grant making comprises of two major parts. These are Multi-year funding and Fast Responsive Funding. Uraia Trust and CREAW will provide multi-year grants while UAF Africa will provide Fast Response Fund. Uraia Trust and CREAW will provide multi-year grants to approximately 50 WROs.

Networking and Alliance Building

Under the coordination of CRAWN Trust, over 230 women will participate in an annual inter-generational women and girls rights forum, with the aim of consolidating the women's movement at the national, county, and grassroots level.

Capacity Building

Uraia Trust and CREAW as principal partners are mandated to support the women's rights organizations to strengthen their capacity, strategies, policies, and work . They will help the WRO's with resources, obtaining, improving, retaining knowledge and skills.

WVL's Governance and Management

A feminist WRO-led approach

Project decision making and oversight will occur through three bodies: The Core Project Management Group; the Project Steering Committee (PSC); the Technical Working Groups (TWG), and the Implementer's Forum. Each of these groups have representation from Kenyan women's rights organizations. CARE oversees and supports the project which will be implemented by four Implementing Partners as follows: 1) Multi-year funding and institutional capacity strengthening components are led by Uraia Trust and CREAW to reach around 50 ultimate recipient WROs with grants and support of two years or more. 2) Fast Responsive Fund grants are led by Urgent Action Fund to reach around 70 ultimate recipient WROs with short-term support.

3) Networking and Alliance Building component is lead by CRAWN Trust and will reach over 230 participants.
